2020 99 Steps
Our infatuation with west side Paso Robles Syrah continues with the 2020 99 Steps. For this vintage we sourced from the Fulldraw Vineyard to make this 100% Syrah wine. To create a stand alone version of Syrah, we used 50% new French Oak and allowed it to age for 18 months before bottling.
The nose covers a lot of ground, logging earthy, charred, sweet, ripe fruit, spice, and even florals all in one. Scorched earth, coffee grounds, and sugarcane radiate, but rich rhubarb pie, black cherry, and perfumed violet flowers are the bedrock of the aromatics. Strong and spicy undercurrents of allspice, cumin, and tea tree are the coup de grâce to a powerfully aromatic scene. The wine enters much more softly and unassuming with black pepper and pimento pepper coupled with tart boysenberry and juicy pomegranate that provide needed acidity for brightness. Tannins are concentrated to the mid palate and are chalky, rife with flavors of cocoa powder and copra, before a long, scorched finish of seared and served filet mignon.
