The Rhone movement on the central coast has been in full swing for over a decade now in Paso Robles, and Mourvedre is the newest driving force. Boutique producers in the area are making artfully crafted single varietal Mourvedres, a grape typically made as a utility in blending for mid palate and overall textural sheen. To create a stand alone version of Mourvedre, we fermented the grapes 100% whole cluster inside 500L French oak puncheons, adding a pandora’s box of spices and body to an already fruitfully forward variety of grape.
The nose is a sentient burst of spices such as allspice and spicy lentils boasted against earthy perfumes of forest floor and dried tobacco. Brightening the bouquet is tangy orange zest and concentrated notes of black cherry and cola. The entry of the palate is a dark and dense combo of cassis and molasses and a bright minerality of wet stone. The mid-palate is richly layered with a velvety and showy tannin structure and mouth watering pomegranate with thai chili flavors . The edges of the wine are rich with savory flavors of bacon and peppercorn and the finish carries the voluptuous tannin structure through and through.
