2017 Righetti Grenache
Grenache is a beautifully expressive variety that is often the main contributor of expressive aromatics and fruitful flavors in blends. One of California’s preeminent Rhone winemakers, John Alban, saw Edna Valley’s ability to produce Grenache and his wines from the region have always been an inspiration of mine. Situated just outside San Luis Obispo, this cool climate region offers wines of restraint and complexity, perfect for a stand-alone Grenache. At the Righetti Ranch vineyard, these vines are widely spaced and minimally irrigated. This, coupled with volcanic rich soil that shifts and splits open into wide and deep crevices, allows the vines to search far, wide, and deep for water and nutrients which is manifested in the depth of flavors within the wine.
Dusty cherries and dried figs along with notes of sweet cedar are contrasted sharply by earthy tones of tobacco, anise, and clove on the nose. Candied strawberry aromas gives life and vibrancy to this expressive Grenache. The palate is silky smooth on the entry and accompanied by fresh flavors of cranberries, raspberries, and red delicious apples. The tannin is silky throughout but accompanied by a textured minerality that adds to the refreshing quality of the palate. The wine finishes long and textured with notes of elderberry and blackberries.
"The core is beautiful in its delicate and focused length leading to a finish of dried red berries accented by sweet herbs" -Doug Wilder, PDRW
