2017 Bien Nacido Syrah
Bien Nacido vineyard, meaning “of good birth”, has made a mark as the preeminent Pinot Noir and Chardonnay vineyard in Santa Barbara County; Arguably, the best on the central coast as a whole. However, a growing cadre of Rhône winemakers have discovered that these legendary farmers have been quietly growing world class Syrah, Grenache, and Viognier in a warmer, narrow canyon on the North edge of the property. Situated on a steep, 45 degree slope, the vines are naturally low yielding and express immense amounts of concentration and character. Even more, the site expresses its own terroir in such a demonstrative way, that any wine made off the property, regardless of winemaker, is as recognizably Bien Nacido as the next.
That unmistakably Bien Nacido aroma of sea smoke and anise dominates the nose, but fresh notes of white pepper, red currants, and ripe fig show a juicy underlying layer. A sweet entry of cranberry quickly tightens with an influx of stoked acidity that brings on bright flavors of blackberry pie and vanilla. The finish boasts earthy tobacco leaf and black pepper that bolster thick and long lasting tannins.
"The palate entry is a beautifully sculpted berry with well-defined tannins in the core finishing with supple black stone fruit, peppercorn, and tobacco" -Doug Wilder, PDWR
